Tax Extension DeadlineOctober is the end of it
The October calendar is the filing the spring form bought, not a new request. The middle of October is the extended due date for an individual return, not a new chance to request the extension. The request itself was due in April.
Ask about this seasonWhat the day actually is
If Form 4868 was filed on time, the middle of October is the day the individual return is due. If that October date lands on a weekend or a federal holiday, the IRS page for the year names the next open weekday, and that is the day we use. Missing it means the return is late, and the filing penalty the extension had been holding off can start. There is no ordinary second extension after that day. Disaster relief and a few narrow announcements are separate, and they are read from the IRS page for that year rather than assumed.
People search this day as if it were a second April, a fresh chance to ask for time. It is the opposite. It is the morning the time runs out. The request was the spring form. October is the filing the spring form bought.
The first cold morning and the calendar
The first cold morning of the season often shows up in this same stretch of weeks. Plenty of owners know the afternoon the temperature drops and the coats are still in a closet. We know that afternoon from the calls that arrive the same week. The return does not wait for a warmer Monday. If your books can be closed, October is also when the next year can still be changed, which is a better use of the month than a scramble that only repeats.
A season has a limit, and it is said out loud
We stop taking new returns for a season on a date we state on the call. That date is not printed here, because a number made up for the page would be theatre. Before that stated day, a return can still be prepared. After it, the honest answer may be that the season is full. The pages stay up either way. The IRS date does not change because a practice is full.
The minimum filing penalty for a return more than 60 days late, with no valid extension, is described on the paying page. October is the day you still have if the spring form was filed. The morning after is a different page, and it does not pretend the two are the same.
