Tax Extension DeadlineThe state form is not the federal form
A state letter in July is not the federal form filed in the spring. A federal extension moves a federal filing. A state that taxes income keeps its own form, its own day, and often its own request for more time.
Name the state on last year's returnWhat the federal form does not carry
Form 4868 moves an individual federal return. Form 7004 moves most business federal returns. Neither form is a state return, and neither one asks the state to wait. Owners who file the federal form and then feel finished have left the state date sitting in the open, in any state that still wants its own page.
Some states tax wages. Some tax the income of the business. Some do neither, and a checklist that tells every reader to file a state twin of Form 4868 is describing a filing those states do not publish. The relief, where it is real, is that there is no state income form behind the federal extension. The work is to know which kind of state you are in before you download a form for a filing that does not exist.
A state balance, if you have one, comes from somewhere you can name. Wages earned in that state, a rental there, or a K-1 with that state's code. Name the somewhere. Do not let a template invent a return to match a headline.
How a state date actually moves
Where a state does tax income, it usually publishes its own due date and its own request for more time. The request often has to arrive by the original state due date, not by the federal extended date. A federal acceptance letter does not move the state day. The state revenue site for this filing year is the page we follow, and a saved PDF from a prior season is not. A sentence copied from last September can be a year stale by the time the form is due.
The penalty shape is the state's own shape. It is not the IRS filing penalty, and it is not the IRS paying penalty. Mixing the two notices is how a small state report becomes a confusing bill. If the letter in your hand names the state, bring the letter. We will not translate it into a federal rate to make the afternoon feel familiar.
The estimate on the state form, when the state asks for one, should come from the same closed month as the federal estimate. Two guesses from two files produce two numbers that cannot be reconciled when the returns are prepared. We would rather have one trail. The federal extension week is a poor time to discover that the state has been waiting since spring.
What to bring from last year
If last year's return named a state, bring that page. We will not guess a filing from a headline or from a city you visited. A single rental, a few weeks of wages, or a K-1 with a state code is enough to make a second return real. The honest first step is to look at last year, not to download a form for a state you might have touched.
If last year named no state income return at all, say that too. The absence is a fact. It means the federal forms are the filing, and a state packet printed "just in case" is how a quiet year grows a form nobody asked for. We carry the state's day on the same calendar as the federal dates only when last year, or this year's facts, show the day is real.
The payroll company the shop already uses keeps the deposit calendar. A state wage account, a withholding account, or an unemployment account sits on that same calendar, and an extension does not move a deposit. From the closed month we can hand that company the file. We do not take the payday run, and we do not treat a state income form as if it were the payroll deposit.
The number still comes from a closed month
A correct state form with a made up number is only half finished. The month that ties to the bank is the month that can feed both estimates. If the feed is open, the unidentified pile stays out of both figures, or it is shown as a range you can defend. In the fall you can point at the labeled note instead of rebuilding the spring from memory.
An October plan for the federal return does not erase a state report that was due in the spring. If that day has already passed, the morning-after page is the order that costs less, and the state letter is named as its own notice. The pages here stay on the federal split between filing and paying. The state page you are reading exists so that split is not asked to do a second government's job.
