The confirmation email names the form, and the estimate line is still blank. The form takes minutes. The estimate of the tax is the part that has to come from somewhere. Here is the build we use when the year is not closed.
Send the fileFour moves, and none of them is a round number
First, name the last month the bank was reconciled. Everything after that month is labeled as open, not mixed in as if it were finished. Second, list deposits and withdrawals in the open months that you can identify without a full close, and leave the unidentified ones in a separate pile. Third, lay last year's return beside that picture and mark the lines that must have changed. Fourth, write the estimate with a one line note of what is still open, so the later return can be tied back to it.
An unreconciled feed is not a reason to skip the extension. It is a reason to keep the unidentified pile out of the estimate, or to show it as a range you can defend. In October you can point at the labeled note instead of rebuilding April from memory.
What the year still allows
An estimate is also a look at whether the year can still be changed. A retirement contribution, the timing of a purchase, the decision to delay a bonus, all of those live in the months that have not happened yet. Waiting until the return is prepared in September means those choices have already closed themselves. The extension week is late for some of them and early for others. We say which, from the month that ties, rather than from a slogan about planning.
Underpaying through the year and then meeting the whole balance in April is the shock this build is meant to shrink. Paying in most of what last year required, or most of what this year is actually doing, is the dull habit that makes the extension number smaller. We do not print a safe harbor percentage as if it were a promise. The right fraction depends on the return in front of us, and it is computed, not remembered.
What we will not invent
If the file cannot support a figure, we will say so. We will not smooth an open feed into a confident total because a form has a blank. The extension can carry a careful number with the gaps written down. It should not carry a performance.
