Tax Extension DeadlineOne line is the judgement
The extension confirmation is in the inbox, and the return is still unwritten. The form is short. One line on it is an estimate of the tax for the whole year, and that line is the one worth an afternoon.
Walk the estimate lineWhat the form is allowed to do
Form 4868 asks for more time to file an individual return. Filed by the April due date, it moves that filing to the middle of October. The balance is still due on the April date the IRS page names, extension or not. Keep the confirmation. The absence of a grant letter is normal, and it is not a sign that the request failed.
People treat the form as a favor the agency might decline. For an ordinary individual return filed on time and filled in, the extension is the expected result. The judgement is not whether you may have the months. The judgement is the number you write.
How a partial year becomes that number
Start from the last month you can tie to the bank. Add the income you already know is coming and that the books have not posted. Subtract the costs you have already incurred and not entered. Then set last year's return beside that picture and write down every place this year is obviously different. A sale, a new hire, a quiet quarter, a K-1 that has not arrived.
The result is a figure you can explain. It will move when the rest of the year is entered. That movement is expected. A figure you cannot explain is the one that causes trouble later, because the return has to be tied back to the note you wrote in April.
What we will not pretend
The strip above is the shape of the note. It is not anyone's figures. Dollars stay off the strip above, because a made-up total would teach the wrong habit. If the books cannot support a number, the honest sentence is that the open months stay labeled as open. The extension can still be filed. The story on the form should match the file you could hand someone in October.
